English news outlet Leicester Mercury (h/t the Sun) has reported that Leicester City are keen on making a move for out of contract Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge. The 29-year-old has struggled over the last few seasons, with form, injuries and even game time.
While he has played 24 games so far this season, a large majority of that has come off the bench. So far, Sturridge has just seven starts to his name, scoring 4 goals in all competitions, which shows why the Foxes shouldn’t make a move for him.
The report reveals that new manager Brendan Rodgers is looking for a new striker to help Jamie Vardy and do more than what Kelechi Iheanacho has done so far.
The former Manchester City star was supposed to be Vardy’s replacement but he’s struggled to make an impact since his move to the King Power stadium.
However, the Nigerian has time to adapt, improve and become the striker that the club need him to become. Yet, given the fact that Jamie Vardy is 32 years old, Leicester City need a new striker.
The Englishman is ageing and along with it, he is losing his speed and attacking instinct that made him the striker he once was.
But that doesn’t mean the Foxes need to target another striker, especially one who has struggled to make an impact over the last three-odd seasons. The last time Daniel Sturridge did well for Liverpool was during the 2013/14 season.
Alongside super striker Luis Suarez, Sturridge finished with a career-best total of 22 goals in the Premier League alone, which showcased the best of his abilities. However, since then, the 29 year old has struggled to make an impact, scoring a combined total of 32 goals over the course of five seasons.
Moreover, he’s missed months and months of action through a series of injuries that have taken away his pace and agility. It was one of the many reasons why Daniel Sturridge was a brilliant centre-forward but as mentioned he has regressed.
The move would be the worst possible thing to happen for both Leicester City and Sturridge himself.
