Spanish news outlet Faro de Vigo has reported that Middlesbrough are among the many clubs interested in making a move for Erik Bugarín. The young forward has been in good form this season, playing exceptionally well for Celta Vigo’s youth sides.
That has seen the likes of Barcelona and even Tottenham show interest in the youngster. However, this is not a move that Middlesbrough need to be concentrating on at the moment.
Their first thing right now should be getting back into the Premier League and to do that, they need a group of quality players. While they do have a decent crop of players at their disposal at the moment, it isn’t enough and that’s something that manager Tony Pulis would know.
The former West Brom boss wants money to spend to reinforce his side next season but that is not a viable option for Boro. Instead, this has caused a small rift between the club and the manager.
The Sun has indicated that Pulis could leave at the end of this season. At the moment, Boro sit in eighth place in the Championship. That is a massive drop for the club given that they were sitting in 5th place less than a month ago.
Things need to change, especially if Middlesbrough are to make it to the playoffs. They are still in the race, thanks to a rather impressive defensive record and the fact that Boro are only two points off sixth place.
It shows why the club needs to focus on players who can help them in the present instead of targeting young players who do have the potential to do well.
The likes of Andy Lonergan, Dmitrios Kostantopoulos, Stewart Downing, and even Rudy Gestede are all ageing and have struggled to make an impact this season.
While Downing has played close to every game, the former Liverpool man is out of contract at the end of the season and also happens to be 34 years old. That has played a big part in Middlesbrough’s downfall, with the club not spending on quality players below the age of 30.
That has affected the club and shows why manager Tony Pulis isn’t keen on staying past his contract.
