Tottenham opinion: Should Spurs sign Ivan Perisic in the summer?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a summer move for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic. The Croatian was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in January (BBC) before a move fell through and the Gunners’ North London rivals are now keen on the 30-year-old.

The report reveals that the Serie A giants will demand a fee of £30million (€35million) for Perisic in the summer but Spurs are only willing to fork out £21.4million (€25million) to acquire the services of the World Cup finalist.

Spurs had a brilliant first half of the season and were expected to challenge the likes of  Liverpool and Manchester City for the title. However, injuries and poor performances have hindered the North Londoners’ attempt and are now at risk of dropping out of the top four by the end of the season.

An injury to star forward Harry Kane forced Mauricio Pochettino to push Son Heung-min up front where he saved Tottenham multiple times. His performances there have opened up a new option for the Spurs boss where he has used the South Korean alongside Kane up top.

This has left Tottenham with a void on the left flank, especially when Dele Alli was out injured. The addition of Perisic has the potential to solve the problem on the left wing but at 30 years of age, the Croatian will be a massive gamble.

Perisic has had a poor campaign for Inter, having scored just 3 goals in the Serie A all season. The Croatian has proven his ability time and again over the years but a switch to a comparatively tougher league at this stage of his career would be a really poor move.

The only argument one can make about signing Perisic would be his experience. The Inter winger has over a decade of experience at the top level but Tottenham have enough players in their squad who have been around for a decent amount of time.

Conclusion

Tottenham would be better off shelling out the same money on somebody much younger than Perisic, who will not only bring in quality but also longevity at the club. Perisic, at the most, could provide value for the next three seasons but beyond that, it would be incredibly difficult for him given his age.
