West Ham United

Forget it Pellegrini – West Ham are better off avoiding this £31m luxury this summer

Why signing Franco Vazquez won’t make sense for West Ham

West Ham United are interested in signing Sevilla‘s attacking midfielder Franco Vazquez to further bolster their creative department. However, it won’t make much sense for the Hammers to buy another player in that department after the purchases of Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson

Getting Vazquez will only add competition and spoil the cognizance created by manager Manuel Pellegrini. Furthermore, the Italian won’t be a regular starter if he arrives, so spending a good sum of money on a backup player won’t be a good option.

Franco Vazquez

Here are the reasons as to why Vazquez to West Ham won’t be feasible:

Sevilla are asking about £31m for the player, which is quite steep given the fact that he may not start many games because of the reasons stated above. The whopping price tag will also mean West Ham “breaking the bank” to get a player, and they have already bought Anderson for a club-record fee.

Furthermore, Vazquez might struggle in a fast and intense league like the Premier League. He is more of a player who likes time on the ball so that he can pick his head up for the next pass. Well, the English football is quite incongruous to that style of play and hence, the Italian might struggle to keep possession in the final third.

Even if the Hammers have money to spend in this window, they can spend to improve other departments. Pellegrini might aim to get a centre-back or a versatile full-back to cover for the defensive positions. It will make his squad more balanced and fearsome.

Verdict

If West Ham sign Vazquez this summer, knowing the certitude that they need someone for their defensive positions, it will be a waste of their money. Therefore, the right move from the Hammers will be to abandon this move and look elsewhere.

In addition, a player of Vazquez’s type will take more time to adapt to the rapid pace of the Premier League, and West Ham would do well to avoid this signing.
