David Silva Is An Unnecessary Luxury That Liverpool Should Avoid And Here’s Why

Manchester City’s midfield magician David Silva is being linked with a January move to Liverpool. The 31-year-old, whose current deal expires in 2019, remains a key part of Pep Guardiola’s plans and it is very likely that the club will offer him a new contract sometime soon.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is understood to be quite an admirer of Silva and is looking to add to his creative options. The Reds have had a very topsy-turvy season so far. They were in a particularly tough spot after Sadio Mane succumbed to an injury, and having a player like Silva will undoubtedly be an advantage in such situations.

Silva, who moved to City from Valencia in 2010, has been a creative genius for Manchester City throughout the years. The Spaniard has been in fine form for City this season too and has been one of their most consistent players. So it’s no surprise that he’s being admired by other clubs.

In fact, it could be deduced that Klopp is monitoring the 31-year-old as a potential replacement for the injured Adam Lallana. Also, the Merseysiders fear that they could lose Emre Can for nothing next summer as the German international is yet to agree to a new deal at Anfield. He can sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs after the new year. However, as far as landing Silva goes, it could be a futile chase for Klopp.

Guardiola is exactly aware of how important Silva is to his title-winning hopes, and he will be keen on handing Silva a 12-month extension to keep him out of the clutches of any potential suitors who are prepared to offer the Spaniard a lucrative long-term deal.

In the absence of Kompany, Silva has mainly captained the club this season and he has been in terrific form. In 15 appearances across all competitions, he has netted 1 goal and has provided 9 assists. Signing a player like that will be extremely tough, and moreover, Liverpool do not lack midfield quality.

Barring Lallana, they have Philippe Coutinho too. Furthermore, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane played extremely well against West Ham on Saturday. So Liverpool certainly do not lack attacking players.

What they need, however, are good defenders. Instead of spending so much time and energy in pursuing a target that seems impossible to sign, Klopp could do a lot better by identifying and bringing in quality replacements for the back line in January.
