Forget It Guardiola – Why Manchester City Must Stay Away From Signing Liverpool’s Emre Can

Manchester City are reportedly considering a January move for Emre Can. With the German’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season – and the fact that he is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield – it is starting to look increasingly likely that he will end up leaving the Reds this summer.

Pep Guardiola will be familiar with Can. When the Spaniard was appointed as manager of Bayern Munich in 2013, he realised that he could not offer the 24-year-old the playing minutes that he had wanted and ended up selling him to Bayer Leverkusen.

Can is, however, not the player that City should look to sign. Manchester City’s squad has proven to be good this season due to their excellent record of having only lost one match so far in the Premier League. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva appear to be doing a stellar job in the heart of the midfield so it is hard to see Can getting regular game time should he join the Cityzens.

In addition to this, he is unlikely to be happy if he is not guaranteed regular first-team opportunities, and at present, it does not seem like he may not receive adequate game time at City. Hence, it may be better for all parties if he ends up joining Juventus, who have long been interested in him.

Recent reports have suggested that Can will demand as much as £100,000-a-week from the next club that he joins and City would be better off investing in a new world-class striker given that Sergio Aguero’s long-term future at the club appears to be uncertain.

Gabriel Jesus is developing into a world-class player and Aguero is a club legend at City. The Argentine is not someone who’d be happy sitting on the bench and may end up moving on to a new challenge once he is not regularly assured of first-team football at City, which could be very soon.

A club like the Sky Blues should also be aiming to sign players who are regularly consistent at churning out world-class performances at the highest level. Can maybe a player who is capable of doing so at the highest level, as he has proven through his performances with Liverpool.

However, he has not done this on a consistent level and this is the reason why he will likely struggle for regular game time should he arrive at the Etihad. Guardiola and co would be better off investing their money elsewhere.
