Arsenal opinion: The Gunners shouldn’t make a move for Steven N’Zonzi

English news outlet Daily Star has reported that Arsenal are keen on making a move for Serie-A star Steven N’Zonzi. The former Stoke City man has struggled since his move to AS Roma last summer.

He has managed to make 34 appearances for the club this season, which includes 25 in the Serie-A and all eight of Roma’s Champions League campaign, including the 3-1 second-leg loss to Porto.

The 30-year-old was coming off one his best seasons. He made 44 appearances for former side Sevilla and then travelled to Russia with France, winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

For Arsenal, however, none of that should really matter in the summer window. Instead, what they should realise is that they do not need another defensive midfielder in their ranks.

That isn’t to say that the Gunners don’t need midfield reinforcements, as they need a replacement for the outgoing Aaron Ramsey. And for all his strengths in midfield, Nzonzi is the last player who should be walking in to replace the Welshman.

The Frenchman, at his best, is a holding midfielder and Arsenal already have their own. By adding Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi last summer, they gave Granit Xhaka a defensive midfield partner that the Swiss international had desperately craved for.

However, with Ramsey on his way out, losing him will be an even bigger blow, without a replacement. The club has been linked with Ever Banega (Mirror) and Jordan Veretout (Metro) as well.

These are the kind of midfielders that Arsenal should really be looking at. Any move for N’Zonzi would be a complete waste of time and money, which could be used elsewhere.

Arsenal need to return to the Champions League and show that they are a club capable of playing top-level football consistently. To do that, they need some of the best players in the world at their disposal, reinforcements in key areas and not look at luxury signings.
