Arsene Wenger’s glorious realm at Arsenal had an abrupt ending when the veteran Frenchman stepped down upon completion of yet another underwhelming season which saw them finish 6th, thus, missing out a Champions League berth for consecutive campaigns.
The appointment of Unai Emery as the new Gunners boss emanated a mixed response, however, the transfer activity under the former Sevilla and Paris St-Germain boss has created positive vibes among the supporters.
The Spaniard has sanctioned five first-team transfers that have been announced so far – and new midfield duo Lucas Torreira and Mattéo Guendouzi are tipped to sort out the long-term concerns in the midfield.
But the exit of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere points out the necessity of further reinforcements in terms of quality and experience, particularly in a central role where the player will orchestrate the game and pull the strings by winning the ball back and distributing it to their lethal attacking third consisting of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil.
The widespread rumours of Andre Gomes’ alleged transfer to North London have been refuelled following his omission from Barcelona’s pre-season squad for the USA tour, as the 24-year-old Portuguese international struggled to settle down at Nou Camp since his move from Valencia a couple of seasons back.
Although Gomes has the potential to flourish with regular game time, the Gunners must avoid any deal for the fringe midfield star and should look out for a more experienced resource who will slot in the centre of the pitch and fit Emery’s brand of play alongside Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka and new boy Torreira.

Premier League demands physicality, pace, hard tackles and work rate, especially in the midfield – a position that drives the entire flow of a football game. Gomes prefers to play short passes, one-twos and layoffs but his inept tackling, crossing and long-ball traits won’t help the Gunners much, who are plotting a return to top-4 contention.
The likes of Steven N’Zonzi and Ever Banega will fit in far better to match Arsenal’s demands because of their experience and quality of the highest order. The English giants must cool down their interest in Andre Gomes considering that better players are available in the transfer market.
