Forget It Conte: Why Chelsea Should Avoid Signing This 31-year Old Serie A And Italian International

Emanuele Giaccherini

Antonio Conte coming into the Chelsea team seems to have really got a lot of rumours going around. Apart from a range of Juventus and Serie A players being linked with the club, especially Radja Nainggolan, it seems a few Italians a little closer to London also seem to be on the radar for the ex-Juventus manager.

Emanuele Giaccherini was one of the best players for Juventus during Conte’s time at the club and he won two Serie A titles and one Supercoppa Italiana also for the side but his career took a bit of a dip when he moved to Sunderland, surprisingly, a couple of years ago.

His time at the Stadium of Light has not been the greatest and his agent believes that the Italian would love to reunite with the Italy manager at Chelsea.

“Giaccherini is a player who played 80 percent of the games for a Juventus that had [Paul] Pogba, [Andrea] Pirlo, [Arturo] Vidal and [Claudio] Marchisio in the midfield,” Furio Valcareggi, his agent told Sky Italia.

“Conte likes him a lot and Chelsea would be a dream. It’s still too early to talk about his future. After the Euros, whoever wants to buy him will not have to pay a high price to Sunderland.”

There might be many who think a reunion with the manager would be a great move but to be honest it wouldn’t be the smartest move in the world. Giaccherini isn’t the youngest player in the world and at 31-years-old he wouldn’t provide Chelsea with the dynamism and energy that is required in the Premier League.

Even at Sunderland, the Italian only made 11 appearances all season last time around and with Conte looking to freshen things up at the club, the former Juventus midfielder wouldn’t be the greatest option to be honest.

There are a few plus points to having Giaccherini, he is extremely versatile and would be a player who wouldn’t cost a lot and would come to the club rather easily. He is also Italian and would be the eyes and ears for Conte and since he has already played in the Premier League, he would know the league very well.

The fact is that Conte needs new players and dynamic stars at the club, Giaccherini might be a player that Conte knows about but he isn’t right for Chelsea at the moment. We have seen how bringing older players at Chelsea does not really work out and the current Italy manager could pretty well be looking beyond players who are above 30 as the Blues look to a new beginning with him.
