Forget it Bruce – Newcastle signing this Bournemouth speedster could turn out to be a transfer disaster

Why Newcastle United should avoid signing Jordon Ibe from Bournemouth

According to a report from the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Bournemouth winger Jordon Ibe on loan. Jordon Ibe, 23, joined Bournemouth from Liverpool in 2016 but has failed to realise his full potential at the Vitality Stadium.

In three seasons with the Cherries, the speedy winger has scored three goals and contributed just eight assists in the Premier League. He has struggled to hold down a starting spot in Eddie Howe’s side.

Bournemouth have signed attackers Arnaut Danjouma and Harry Wilson, who have added competition for Ibe next season. In theory, Ibe will see less game time going forward, with Ryan Fraser seemingly staying put at the club, and it is no surprise to see him made available on loan this summer.

As far as Newcastle United are concerned, they have bounced back extremely well after a sluggish start to the summer transfer window. The Toon have made some exciting signings and there appears to be some optimism amongst the fans heading into the new season under Steve Bruce, who replaced Rafael Benitez last month.

Bruce is hoping to enjoy a busy end to the transfer window, with the Newcastle boss keen to add the likes of Ahmed Elmohamady and Emil Krafth to his squad. However, he should stay away from any potential loan signing of Jordon Ibe.

Ibe has not had the best of stints down at the south coast club – in 88 appearances, he has scored just five goals and made nine assists across all competitions. He has struggled to bring any levels of consistency to his game, failing to convince Eddie Howe.

The 23-year-old possesses an abundance of energy and pace and is a very direct winger when on the ball, meaning he would suit Bruce’s style of play at Newcastle.

Nevertheless, his end product and understanding of the game hasn’t improved a bit, and he continues to be one of the most inconsistent players in the Premier League.

Verdict

Ibe is far from a finished article that Bruce should avoid bringing in at the club, even if he can potentially add a bit of pace and energy to the Newcastle attack. The Magpies manager would do well by targeting some other winger if he is in real need to bolster his wide department.

That being said, Newcastle would do a world of good by not signing Ibe from Bournemouth.
