Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has spoken about his hopes of joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer after the club turned down a £25million bid from the French champions in January, reports the Sun.
The Senegalese was open about his desire for the move to go through during the January saga and was left disappointed as the transfer failed to materialise. Everton manager Marco Silva had hoped Gueye would put the disappointment of missing out on a move to PSG behind him, but as far as the midfielder’s latest comments are concerned, it seems like his mind remains focused on joining PSG.
Following Gueye’s recent comments, Silva should plan for the midfielder’s potential departure from now on. Silva should prioritise strengthening the defence in summer but a midfielder now also has to be at the top of the wishlist. To put things into perspective, Everton must make a move for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Viktor Kovalenko.
Viktor Kovalenko, 23, is currently one of the most promising young talents in Europe. A product of Shakhtar’s youth system, the 23-year-old has been in and out of the team this season. Yet, he has managed three goals and an assists in 11 league games.
A technically-gifted and tactically versatile midfielder, Kovalenko is equally adept at playing as a no.10 or in a double-pivot. Capable of reading the game well, the Ukrainian’s creativity and passing range from the middle of the park or from an advanced role can split any team to shreds. The 23-year-old’s intelligence in the final third is very well complemented by his physical strength and ability in the air.
Blessed with a good engine, vision, and acumen to make late runs in the box to score goals, Kovalenko is developing at a rapid rate and has all the attributes to flourish in the Premier League.
With Gueye determined to leave Everton and Morgan Schneiderlin completely out of favour, Silva needs to bring in a midfielder to add depth to his squad.
Tom Davies and on-loan star Andre Gomes have done well but the Toffees need more quality if they are to realistically challenge for a place in the top six next season.
