Forget Gordon – 3 Top-class goalkeepers Celtic could sign including PSG star

Share

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordan is showing no signs of stopping even at 35. He will turn 36 in December but still has shown plenty of enthusiasm and life to continue as the first-choice goalkeeper under Brendan Rodgers next season.

Gordon, who missed nearly three seasons due to a serious knee problem had injury setbacks last season too. He was set to miss the Scottish Cup final due to a knee injury and his deputy Scott Bain was hoping to feature against Motherwell. However, Gordon returned back in time as Celtic defeated Motherwell 2-0 to clinch the Scottish Cup at Hampden.

However, with Gordon no longer becoming younger and could leave for a new adventure in summer, here are three goalkeepers Celtic must consider signing.

Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain)

Kevin Trapp signed for PSG in the summer of 2015 on a five-year deal from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt but was dropped this past season with Alphonse Areola preferred instead. Trapp was constantly overlooked by now Arsenal manager Unai Emery.

However, the German shouldn’t be keen to stay deputy to Areola next season and must leave the French giants for regular first-team football. Celtic must consider signing Trapp with Gordan ageing and Bain still learning the ropes.

Confident in the box, skill with the ball at his feet and good aerial ability, Trapp could be a long-term investment for the Bhoys.

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)

A regular at Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel has grown by leaps and bounds. The Dane’s reflexes are remarkable and his ability to stop the ball with his feet is unrivalled.

Kasper Schmeichel

Schmeichel is tall, quick, while his agility and lightning quick reflexes make him a reliable goalkeeper to have in the squad. At 31, he is playing at the peak of his powers and Celtic should consider signing him to replace the ageing Gordon.

Guillermo Ochoa (Standard Liege)

While Gordon is in no hurry to stop, Celtic must consider plotting a long-term replacement. And one of Mexico’s cultured goalkeepers – Guillermo Ochoa may not be the long-term solution but could give a solid few years between the sticks at Paradise.

Guillermo Ochoa

Currently playing in Belgium, Ochoa is renowned for his cat-like reflexes in stopping shots. The man with a curly hair has a strong right hand, can dive on both sides very well and is capable of winning matches on his own.

If Rodgers considers a short-term investment in goal, Ochoa could be the right man for the Scottish champions.
