Forget Fabregas, Should Arsenal Go After Manchester United and City’s Barcelona Target?

Thiago Alcantara

Barcelona have already brought in the Brazilian sensation Neymar in a huge deal. While this would strengthen the team to a lot extent and make their attack more organized, quite a few midfielders already present at the club may not be very happy with the acquisition. For one thing, this transfer would certainly mean their gametime reduced and now some of them may be looking to set foot to new shores.

One such player whose playing minutes is bound to take a toll with the new Barcelona player, is Thiago Alcantara, hailed by many quarters as the next Xavi. Now we all know that Manchester United have already inquired about him and reportedly also approached Barcelona for a possible transfer. It is also known that Manchester City and most recently Real Madrid are after the midfielder, but Thiago has already ruled out the possiility of joining Barca’s bitter rivals Madrid.

According to Mundo Deportivo Quotes from Real president Florentino Perez claim:

‘’If there is a player who does not seem to me right Barcelona. If Barcelona does not care as we do, we’ll go for it,”

But what we look to discuss here is the possibility of a transfer to Arsenal.

Would Alcantara be a possible option for the Gunners, if Fabregas remains at the Camp Nou? The youngster have been a part and parcel of Barca first team and is almost on the verge of breaking into their system on a regular basis, so it would not take much for him to break in to Arsenal’s starting berth. But the real question is, do they need him and have a place to fit him in the centre of the park?

The Gunners are keeping everyone on the feet with their rumoured £70m transfer kitty and look to make some serious addition to their squad. Let us put it this way. For a long time Arsene Wenger has abstained from making hefty transfers and concentrated on improving the finances of the club. But in these processes they have not laid their hands on a silverware for the last eight years with the stature of the club being reduced to an also-ran.

If this season Wenger does not moves closer to winning a single trophy or even make any serious business, the cries among the fans for his head will be the strongest ever and that would prove to a very low point for the highly esteemed Frenchman.

Therefore more than anything else, to prevent this inglorious chapter, Wenger needs to spend money and spend it big. And taking a glimpse of their current team it is not hard to imagine why a player like Thiago Alcantara would be such a vital addition.

Their attacking has lost the flair that it used to have in the past days and although Cazorla and Wilshere are in the process of bringing it back to the same stature, Thiago would provide the team with the solidity in the midfield that it highly requires now and more than solidity, he can bring back the one-touch passing and free flowing football that has almost been extinct at the Emirates off late. Thiago would remain a constant goal threat for the opposition and the opposition would have a hard time restraining him.

Again, I am not jumping the guns here and have completely ignored the tactical part of the transfer, but just making an honest suggestion here. The comments space underneath is for you, make your voice heard!
