Forget Eriksen – Tottenham signing this gifted 26-year-old would be a massive coup

Why Julian Draxler would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham

According to The Telegraph, Christian Eriksen is still intent on leaving Tottenham when his contract runs out at the end of the season. He will resist all offers to sign a new deal and extend his six-year stay at the club.

Eriksen, 27, joined Tottenham from Ajax back in 2013 and has become a star at the club. The Telegraph claims that Juventus and Inter Milan are believed to be among those interested, while Real Madrid were also in the mix the past summer.

The Dane will be able to talk to foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement in the New Year. The 27-year-old will be available for nothing within six months but he could depart Tottenham next month when the transfer window opens, the report adds.

Last season, Eriksen made 51 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 10 goals and claiming 17 assists.

However, the Denmark international has not performed to the standards he has set during his time at Spurs this season and was anonymous during Spurs’ 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their Champions League dead rubber on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old expressed his desire for a change of scene over the summer. As he has entered the final six months of his contract, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho should offload Eriksen and bring in his replacement next month.

Back in June, Daily Star had claimed that Paris Saint-Germain offered Julian Draxler to Spurs as the player was deemed surplus to requirements. However, no deal materialized and the German has stayed put at PSG.

Julian Draxler, 26, started 22 of their 32 league games last season, scoring three goals and managing eight assists. He has endured an injury-hit 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign, racking up just six league appearances till date.

The Germany international, who joined PSG from Wolfsburg in 2017, hasn’t lived up to his high potential at the Parisian club. He has struggled for opportunities following the high-profile arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, thus affecting his development as a player.

With opportunities currently far and few under Thomas Tuchel, Draxler should look to leave PSG in January.

And a move to Spurs could help Draxler reinvigorate his career that has stuttered in the last couple of years.

Technically gifted and tactically versatile, the 26-year-old would provide Spurs with creativity and guile from the midfield—two things that they would immediately lose if they sell Eriksen.

The German is a classy operator of the ball and can play in different positions across midfield and attack and also come up with goals.

All in all, he has the qualities to be an ideal replacement for Eriksen. In the video below, one can get a glimpse of Draxler’s style of play and the qualities he could bring to Spurs if a move goes through.

Verdict

Tottenham must back Mourinho in the upcoming transfer window by bringing in some real quality. And Draxler has everything that the north London club needs in order to reach the next level.
