With a new man at the helm and the harsh realisation that they are miles behind Celtic, new faces are guaranteed at Ibrox next season.
Apart from deciding who comes in, one of Pedro Caixinha’s main jobs would be to decide who leaves the club in order to make room for them. Here are two players Rangers could demand some sort of fee for, in the close season.
Having gained a contract extension last summer after his first year at the club, Rob Kiernan has not really fulfilled the potential the club thought he had as a centre-half.
Kiernan has talent, but he just may not be quite what Pedro Caixinha is looking for and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him sold in the summer.
Having not paid a huge fee to Wigan for Kiernan upon arrival in 2015, his time at Rangers may be looked upon as a gamble that didn’t really pay off, so any bids forthcoming from the Championship may be welcomed by Caixinha, and the money can be reinvested.
Mark Warburton’s dreadful and confusing change of tactics when it came to transfers last summer hit Rangers hard in the first half of the season. With the obvious exception of Kenny Miller, the old guard need to make room for fresher faces around the place.
It looks as though the clearout could all be completed by the end of this summer. Joey Barton’s contract was ripped up last November by the club making him the first of these controversial signings to leave. Also, the short-term deals that defenders Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos are on, last only until the end of May.
That only leaves former Tottenham and Portsmouth star Niko Kranjcar. The 32-year-old winger has a contract which runs until summer 2018 but has offered precious little to Rangers so far. In truth, his career has been on a downward slope for some time and there is no guarantee that it stops here.
Kranjcar has not managed double figures in terms of appearances since 2014/15 at Queens Park Rangers, equally not reaching 10 or more goals since his Hajduk Split days way back in 2006. As an attacking midfielder or winger, his figures are very poor for a player of undoubted natural ability and so it is most certainly time for Rangers to cut their losses on the player and sell him up.
