Forget Assombalonga – Middlesbrough must sign this out of favour Burnley attacker as replacement

Why Middlesbrough must sign Burnley forward Sam Vokes

According to a report by The Northern Echo, Championship outfit Middlesbrough are interested in signing Burnley forward Sam Vokes this summer. The Clarets enjoyed a brilliant campaign last season, as they finished 7th in the Premier League.

By doing so, they secured a Europa League spot and it goes without saying that Sean Dyche has done a brilliant job for the club. However, with the transfer window up and running, Middlesbrough are keen on acquiring Vokes’ services.

Middlesbrough finished 5th in the Championship last season but they failed to secure a promotion to the English top-flight. Tony Pulis has quite a task ahead of him as he must ensure the club rises above the cut-throat competition to secure a playoff spot yet again. To do so, Vokes could be a brilliant option.

The report further states that the club could offload Britt Assombalonga, provided they receive the right offer. In that case, signing Vokes would be a masterstroke by the Riverside outfit.

Over the course of the previous campaign, Vokes failed to cement a starting spot at Burnley. The likes of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood are ahead of him in the pecking order and the Wales international suffered a good number of injuries as well.

He started merely 7 games in the Premier League while recording 23 appearances off the bench. In addition to that, he was provided with solitary starts in the FA Cup as well as the League Cup. At 28 years of age, surely Vokes deserves to play more often.

Despite the shortage of game time, Vokes managed to chip in with 4 goals and an assist in the Premier League. He certainly does not lack talent and is widely renowned for his aerial skills. In fact, the player won an average of 4.1 aerial duels last season.

Vokes’ finishing is quite admirable as well and he is a solid threat in the final third. However, the Welshman’s passing abilities and positional awareness are rather weak. Nevertheless, he could still be a great option for Middlesbrough and aid them in their quest to return to the Premier League.

On his day, Vokes can be a force to reckon with inside the box. He boasts of lethal attacking threat and has the required physique, pace and mobility to act as a target man.

In Pulis’ style of play, the striker could truly work wonders. Ahead of Burnley’s promotion to the top-flight, Vokes fired 16 goals in 46 Championship games, meaning he is a proven talent in the second-tier competition as well. Hence, Middlesbrough must go all out to secure his signature.
