Food for thought – It is high time for Manchester City to reward this £57m star’s promising displays with a new and improved contract

Manchester City Opinion – Manchester City should offer new contract to Aymeric Laporte

According to a report in Sun Football, Premier League leaders Manchester City are set to offer a new contract to centre-back Aymeric Laporte after a sensational start to the season.

The Frenchman arrived at the Etihad stadium in January of 2018 for £57m and has made a terrific impact. The 24-year-old is a first-choice centre-back in the team.

Laporte has started every league game bar one this season. He has played every minute of Champions League football, epitomising the importance of the player in the eyes of the manager.

Here’s why Manchester City offering him a new deal is an absolute no-brainer:

Laporte’s new deal assures solid defensive future for City

Aymeric Laporte’s arrival at Manchester City came at the right time for various reasons. The first rationale being the risk that accompanied with Nicolas Otamendi playing alongside John Stones. While the duo did well, the Argentine has had moments of rashness to throw all the good work away.

The second big reason was the ageing Vincent Kompany, who just cannot keep himself fit for a long period of time and be available for selection on a regular basis.

Hence, despite City running away with the league, they brought Laporte mid-season last year. And the 24-year-old hasn’t kept a foot wrong so far.

He has solidified his place as the first-choice central defender with Stones, making the team more solid at the back. The Frenchman is not only a good defender, he is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to playing out from the back.

The ex Athletic Bilbao man has a pass completion rate of 93.8% – any midfielder would be proud of that. Furthermore, those passes are not just for the sake of it, he starts most attacks from the back with pinpoint balls to midfield runners or the wide players. (Whoscored)

Conclusion

At the age of 24, Laporte has close to 10 years of football at the top-level left in him, being a centre-back. He has shown more than enough to warrant a new deal at Manchester City.

From the club’s viewpoint, securing the future of one of their most vital players would be another step in the right direction.
