Wolves are yet to register a win and last season seems long ago after having made it to the 7th last season. They now sit in 19th place with only 3 points on the board and it looks like it’s going to be a long season with Europa League games to contend with as well.
Wolves had a very tight squad that hardly rotated last season and that helped them get a lot of consistency over time but it’s different now with more matches to play already.
Here’s what Wolves need to do if they want to recover the form from last season:
Organize that defence
Wolves have been uncharacteristically leaky in defence in their last two league games, having conceded 8 goals in the last two games.
One of the factors behind this has been that they’ve conceded the first goal and this gives the opposition the initiative to play on the counter and they don’t look organized anymore.
They need to hold out for longer and grind it for longer till they get a chance to score but they’ve not been as resolute and concede goals in quick succession.
Attack with more verve
Wolves are known for being a counter-attacking side but they’ve hardly taken shots this season. It was damning that they had only one shot in the first half against Chelsea.
They can’t be this conservative as it’s asking an awful lot from not just their forward players but their entire side to just sit back and absorb pressure as it’s one goal away from being a plan that is completely blown out of the window.
Be more flexible with the formation
By this, no one expects Wolves to not play a 3 man backline but maybe switch it up with a 3-4-3 for a change and even managers like Antonio Conte, who was also very rigid about a 3-man defence, would often move to a 4-man backline in the second half.
Nuno Espirito Santo has to get some wins on board as they breed confidence and Wolves are heading into every game like it’s a potential banana skin.
