“Fast becoming a legend”, “Don’t ever leave me”: Some Tottenham fans in love with star man after yet another goal + Match report

Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle: Son scores a late winner to send Spurs second

Heung-Min Son ended an afternoon of frustration for Tottenham at Wembley when he thumped home a shot through Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to secure a big win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The victory temporarily lifts Tottenham up to second position in the Premier League and the relief was understandable when Son’s shot hit the back of the net in the 83rd minute, breaching Newcastle’s resolute defence that threatened to deny the home side all three points.

Pochettino’s side dominated possession from the first minute of the game but failed to create openings, with Newcastle defending deep and with a lot of bodies. Lucas Moura had the best chance in the half to give Tottenham the lead but he sent a free header wide from close range.

Spurs dominated possession and penned the visitors back. Newcastle were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure, trying to hit the hosts on the break. But Tottenham created waves of attack that denied Newcastle any possession.

Pochettino’s team upped the ante in the final stages of the half and should have taken the lead, only for Erik Lamela to smack his header against the woodwork off Jan Vertonghen’s delicious cross from the left.

Newcastle came back at the hosts after the break, as Salomon Rondon found the frame of the goal, heading a DeAndre Yedlin cross against the post after he had started the move on the edge the penalty area. But Tottenham responded and kept things under their control with their passing and movement.

Christian Eriksen thought he had put Tottenham ahead but his goal-bound flick was hooked off the line by Fabian Schar. At the other end, Ayoze Perez’s curling effort was kept out by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

And then arrived the moment for Tottenham, finally, as Son’s effort following Fernando Llorente’s chest-down somehow crept under the legs of Martin Dubravka, who will feel he should have done better.
