Fantastic Forrest, Fabulous Edouard: The Best And The Worst Rated Celtic Players From Their 5-1 Thrashing Of Motherwell

brendan rodgers

Celtic extended their unbeaten run in the domestic competitions to a remarkable 67 games, when they thrashed Motherwell 5-1 at the Celtic Park, on Saturday.

Facing the Steelmen for the third time in the space of one week, the Bhoys took the lead as early as the 16th minute when loanee Odsonne Edouard got on the end of a Scott Sinclair cross to make it 1-0. The French youngster then doubled his and his team’s tally in the 33rd minute, with a brilliant finish from the edge of the box.

Things got a bit nervy when Elliot Frears pulled one back for the visitors in the 65th minute, but substitute James Forrest restored Celtic’s two-goal cushion eleven minutes later, before Edouard went on to complete his hat-trick in the 84th minute. There was still enough time left for Forrest to get himself on the scoresheet once again late in the game, to heap further misery on Motherwell.

The win means Brendan Rodgers’ side are seven points ahead at the top of the table.

Here’s how the Celtic players fared on the day;

Craig Gordon – 6/10

Did not have a whole lot to do between the sticks, but could have done better with the goal. Had one late save to make.

Mikael Lustig – 6.5/10

Had a solid outing defensively and linked up well with the likes of Jonny Hayes and Forrest going forward. Had a volleyed effort saved.

Kristoffer Ajer – 7/10

Handed a rare start in the heart of the defence, the youngster demonstrated why he warrants more game time with a strong display.

Dedryck Boyata – 6.5/10

Kept the threat of Louis Moult at bay for large parts of the game, but could not stop Frear from finding the net.

Kieran Tierney

Kieran Tierney – 7/10

As always made solid contributions at both ends of the pitch, sending in some good crosses from the left, while remaining strong at the back.

Scott Brown – 7/10

Exerted his usual influence in the middle of the park, to help his team control the proceedings for most parts of the game.

Olivier Ntcham – 7/10

Had a solid outing alongside Brown. Was involved in the build-up to the opening goal and had a free-kick saved.

Jonny Hayes – 8/10

His finest display since joining the champions in the summer. Posed all sorts of troubles to the opposition on the right-flank and sent in a number of dangerous balls into the box.

Tom Rogic – 6.5/10

Had a goal disallowed and shot over the bar when he should have scored. Not as effective as he can be, but there were some moments of clever and neat link-up.

Scott Sinclair – 7/10

Got the assist for the opening goal and was a bright spark down the left side until he was taken off with an ankle injury.

Odsonne Edouard – 9/10

Handed a rare start by the manager, the loanee from Paris Saint-Germain grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring a brilliant hat-trick to fire his team to a win.

Substitutes

Callum McGregor – 6/10

Replaced Ntcham for the final twenty-two minutes of the match. Was solid.

James Forrest – 9/10

On for Hayes, the Scotsman made a serious impact, scoring the third and fifth goals to put the game to bed.

Stuart Armstrong – N/A

Replaced Sinclair late in the game.
