Fans Opinion – Who Would Be The Perfect Striker For Newcastle Next Season? This Former Barcelona Ace?

Joshua King

Many names are already being thrown about when it concerns who Newcastle United may bring in with their reported £100million transfer war chest. But it’s the possibility of an expensive new striker that whets the appetite most among Newcastle fans.

In the past, signings such as Malcolm MacDonald, Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand and Michael Owen surprised the football world and it seems there may be more to come from this whirlwind of a football club. Premier League football, a great stadium and the chance to work with a world-class coach in Rafael Benitez are all major pulling points and it would not be a surprise if Newcastle were to land a top class no.9.

So far though, the candidates are refreshingly high in quality, but would not be the subject of ostentatious bids and mass media circuses. Until now, the names of Tammy Abraham, Callum Wilson, Joshua King, Andre Gray, Jay Rodriguez, Jermain Defoe and Sandro Ramirez are just a few to be linked with moves to the club.

These names, to one degree or another, are all valid candidates, as well as this season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle and current second choice Aleksandar Mitrovic too. Despite his obvious quality, whether Benitez would take a risk on bringing Abraham to replace Gayle as no.9, considering that they were playing in the same league this season, seems a little doubtful.

Sandro Ramirez

Jermain Defoe will leave Sunderland soon and may or may not wish to stay in and around Newcastle. However, even for Benitez and his change of transfer policy, Defoe’s age would be a factor. The fans will have a divided view on bringing in Sunderland’s top man. Andre Gray has not conclusively proven that he can be a top class Premier League striker at Burnley and so again, doesn’t really capture the fans’ collective imagination.

Callum Wilson isn’t even the first choice at Bournemouth these days and has a similar profile to Benik Afobe, so it is a doubt if he’d be considered good enough. They have been outdone by Joshua King this term, who looks like a genuine candidate, should he become available and is someone the fans would take to, if not get overly excited by.

Jay Rodriguez looks harshly treated at Southampton and would be another player who would be welcomed by the Newcastle fans, though not as much as Malaga’s exciting former Barcelona player SANDRO RAMIREZ. Sandro has the sort of profile which makes you think of an Aguero or a David Villa and would welcome the chance to work with his fellow countryman. Bringing him in is a distinct possibility and would be an exciting move – one that would be favoured by the fans as well.
