Everton have had a few issues this season but no more so than scoring goals. Barring Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson, who’ve each netted 13 goals, nobody else has even hit double figures. Dominic Calvert Lewin has six to his name, Theo Walcott has five and Cenk Tosun has three.
They need reliable goalscorers. The Toffees have the potential to do so much more and their squad screams of a Europa League side at the very least.
They have the potential but they’ve struggled to put across any fight towards the end of the season. In the end, the final Europa League spot went to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
While it would be unfair, it’s exactly why Everton need to be stepping up their recruitment and search to replace Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian left a little over two years ago for Manchester United and replacing him is something the club hasn’t done.
Instead, as soon as Lukaku left, Everton added Davy Klassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney. Barring the Icelandic star, neither of the other two have managed to produce the goods and to make things worse, they are not even with Everton any longer.
That needs to change in the coming summer window. Especially, if the Toffees want to have even the slightest chance of surviving the Premier League.
It is why the club needs to re-ignite a move for Marcus Thuram, a player that they were heavily linked with a few months ago (Liverpool Echo).
Still, at Guingamp, the 21-year-old has proven to be a reliable and consistent goalscorer for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 12 so far this season.
He did struggle towards the end of the season but found his way back despite all that. A versatile star, Thuram can play either as a winger or a striker, although his preferred position is down the middle.
The son of 1998 World Cup winner Lillian Thuram, Marcus, unlike his father, is an attacker and a rather good one at that. Tall, strong, good in the air and agile, Thuram has inherited his father’s athleticism but more so, combined that with creativity and guile around the final third.
It’s what makes him a great option for Everton and his physicality will help him adjust to the Premier League and its ferocity very well.
