Everton signing this 25-year-old Spanish defender in his prime would be an excellent move by Marco Silva

Why Diego Llorente would be an excellent signing for Everton

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Everton have discussed a move for Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente.

The Spaniard, 25, was previously on the books of Real Madrid but ended up leaving Los Blancos after failing to break into the first-team. However, he has impressed with Real Sociedad since joining two years ago and gone on to make 48 La Liga appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

The defender has been a regular at the Anoeta Stadium and has represented the Spanish national team on four occasions. Given his consistent performances for Sociedad in the La Liga for the last couple of seasons, Everton must go all out to capture Diego Llorente.

But there are still areas that need improvement if Royal Blues are to push on towards a dream top-four finish. A solid centre-back to play with Michael Keane has to be a priority after loanee Kurt Zouma returned back to Chelsea, while Phil Jagielka was released at the end of last season.

Zouma shone on loan at Goodison Park last season and was a key player for Silva’s side in 2018-19, but Chelsea are keen to keep hold of the Frenchman following their transfer ban. With less than a week left for the transfer deadline, Silva should drop his interest in Zouma and instead go for Diego Llorente.

Standing at 6ft 1in tall, Llorente isn’t the most imposing of defenders, but he reads the game well and can play out from the back with utmost ease and poise, whilst being strong in the air. Due to his technique and composure on the ball, he can also operate as a defensive midfielder when required.

The Spanish international is also a good header of the ball in both boxes and has a decent turn of pace to recover himself from dangerous situations.

Verdict

Llorente is only 25-years old and has his best years ahead of him. He would be heading into his prime and would be one of Everton’s smart recruits if he was to make the move. The Spaniard’s signing would make the Toffees’ transfer window a roaring success.
