Everton opinion: The Toffees shouldn’t sign Kurt Zouma permanently

Earlier in the week, English news outlet Daily Mail had reported that Everton boss Marco Silva is very keen on making Kurt Zouma’s move permanent. The 24-year-old has been on loan at Everton since the start of the season and has done relatively well.

However, the move has no option to make it permanent and Zouma will return to parent club Chelsea. A Chelsea youth star, the 24-year-old arrived just over five years ago from Saint-Etienne, eventually making his debut for the Blues a few years later.

He played consistently for the club, with 23 appearances to his name in the 2015/16 season but has since fallen out of favour. Under former manager Antonio Conte, Zouma spent a large portion of the season warming the bench.

He eventually left for another loan spell at Stoke City and did well, before suffering an injury.

This season as well, Zouma’s time has been cut short due to various injury issues and that is where a problem arises for Everton. While the 24-year-old has the potential to do really well, he has struggled to play consistently.

At this stage of development, it is not something that Everton need. What the Toffees do need is someone reliable, consistent and an ever-present presence in their starting line-up.

In short, they need someone who can replace the ageing Phil Jagielka, with the Everton veteran’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

There have been no talks of an extension for the 36-year-old. Kurt Zouma has shown signs of being someone who is capable of replacing him, but they have been mere flashes in the pan.

Summer signing Yerry Mina has also done the same but the Colombian also has his issues with injuries. That leaves the club with just Michael Keane.

It’s a problem and given that Everton are chasing a potential top-seven or even a top-six spot next season, it’s a problem they need to address.

Conclusion

Everton have lofty ambitions and while they are achievable, they’ll first need reinforcements to move ahead.

A reliable goalscorer to help Richarlison, a new central midfielder and another centre-back to help out defensively should all be on the club’s summer shortlist.

However, while they might look towards Kurt Zouma, it’s a move that really shouldn’t happen.
