Everton opinion: Why the Toffees should make a move for Morgan Sanson?

According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Everton are one of three Premier League sides keen on Marseille ace Morgan Sanson—Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United being the others.

The Frenchman joined Marseille in 2017 and has established himself as a key player for the club. Last season, Morgan Sanson made 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals. However, Marseille failed to qualify for the Champions League next season and the club are now open to selling the Frenchman for around £27m to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, the report adds.

The Toffees have made two signings so far in the summer transfer window, with the latest being Andre Gomes. The club announced the permanent signing of midfielder Andre Gomes from Barcelona on a five-year deal on Wednesday. The Portugal international has moved to Goodison Park, following a successful loan spell last season.

Despite the addition of Gomes, Marco Silva must add more depth to his midfield. There is a big possibility of Idrissa Gueye departing Everton this summer amidst links with Paris Saint-Germain. The Sun claim Paris Saint-Germain are planning to revive their interest in the Senegalese after failing to land him during the January transfer window.

Gueye is open to joining the French champions and that could see Silva lose one of the most important players of his squad this summer. So, Silva has to keep his options wide open while signing a replacement for the 29-year-old, who has been one of best tacklers in the Premier League for the last couple of years now.

Sanson won’t be a like-for-like replacement for Gueye but he’ll offer much more than what the Senegalese brings to the table. A classy operator off the ball, the Frenchman can play in different positions across the midfield and uses his passing range to dictate the tempo of play.

When it comes to his strengths, two of his primary attributes which define his style of play are his vision to unlock defences and ability to pick a pass in the final third. That, coupled with his creativity, dribbling skills, sharpness and instincts to make well-timed runs in the box to score goals make Sanson such an exciting midfielder.

A well-rounded midfielder, the 24-year-old would bring even more quality to the Everton midfield, whilst competing with Gylfi Sigurdsson for a place in Silva’s starting XI.

Verdict

There were signs of some progress in the second half of last season under Silva. The Portuguese tactician will be keen to improve further next term and landing Sanson would be a step in the right direction.
