Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should go all out to sign Davide Biraschi

According to Liverpool Echo, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing Genoa defender Davide Biraschi this summer. The Italian defender, 25, is highly sought-after following his 34 game Serie A campaign, attracting interest from Atalanta, Lazio and Newcastle United as well.

But it is Everton that should win the race for Davide Biraschi’s signature. Everton have brought in Andre Gomes and Jonas Lossl so far, but they are just getting started.

The Toffees finished last season very strongly and Marco Silva will be keen to build on it. The Portuguese tactician is certainly eyeing for more reinforcements to build a squad capable of challenging the ‘Big-Six’ next season.

With the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United having suffered difficult transfer windows so far and Chelsea facing a two-window transfer ban, the Merseysiders do have a glorious opportunity of achieving a place in Europe.

After adding the likes of Lossl and Gomes to his squad, Silva wants to sign Kurt Zouma from Chelsea. Zouma impressed on his season-long loan spell at Goodison Park and is rightfully wanted by the Toffees on a permanent deal.

However, Frank Lampard’s appointment as the new Chelsea manager changed things Lampard has decided that he would like to retain the French defender’s services and the Toffees have been left searching for other candidates.

As Phil Jagielka has also left the club, Silva is short as far as the options in defence are concerned. Mason Holgate did have a decent loan spell with West Brom but he is still young and inexperienced at the highest level to start games regularly for Everton.

Yerry Mina had an injury-ravaged debut season at the Goodison Park and will need to prove his fitness during the pre-season.

Michael Keane was a solid performer and needs a reliable player besides him in central defence next term. Biraschi could prove to be a superb alternative to the Chelsea centre-back.

Biraschi was excellent for Genoa last season, catching the eye with his tough-tackling, aggression and ability to win aerial duels.

The former Italy Under-21 international is also comfortable with the ball at his feet and has a decent turn of pace. A fantastic interceptor, the 25-year-old is reliable in the air and he seems to have a mature head over his shoulder.

Verdict

Biraschi has all the defensive qualities to play for a top side like Everton. The 25-year-old has his best years ahead of him and he can be a reliable option for the Toffees to consider should they fail in landing Zouma.
