Everton opinion: Should the Toffees sign Eray Comert in the summer?
According to a report from the Daily Star, Everton sent scouts to watch Basel’s 21-year-old centre-back Eray Comert. The highly-rated defender will enter the final year of his contract next season and the Toffees are looking to swoop in for him in the summer.
Everton and fellow Premier League club Arsenal were previously linked with Comert in the winter transfer window, with the Toffees even considering a £7million bid for the Swiss under-21 skipper. But a deal failed to materialise and he stayed with Basel.
However, the centre-half’s recent performances have caught Everton’s eye again and the Toffees, with their own problems in the heart of the defence, should make a move for the youngster to partner Michael Keane next season.
Marco’s Silva’s side have had a shaky season so far but thanks to recent form, Everton are back in the race for a top seven finish.
The Toffees are now just 2 points below seventh-placed Leicester City and if they can continue to perform as they did against Arsenal in their 1-0 victory, they have every chance of making it to Europe next season.
Two of Everton’s most consistent players this season have been their on-loan stars – Andre Gomes and Kurt Zouma. Gomes’ signing is a serious possibility for the Toffees, with the Portuguese international having no future at his parent club Barcelona.
However, signing Kurt Zouma permanently will be a much more difficult task for Everton due to the transfer ban imposed on Chelsea. The Blues will need all the help that they can get if the ban does not get overturned and Zouma could well have a part to play for them next season.
This will cause a major headache for Marco Silva under whom Zouma has settled in wonderfully. The Toffees would have to bring in a replacement for the Frenchman and Comert is a perfect option to bring to Goodison Park in the summer.
Comert has been a regular for Basel this season, having played 26 times for them in all competitions. The Swiss defender has been hugely impressive at the back for Basel and despite his age, he has shown incredible leadership.
A calm and composed figure, Comert is incredibly intelligent with his positioning and possesses outstanding awareness of danger. He shows no signs of fear when
Comert is incredibly strong with tackling and possesses a quick burst of pace to get in between the ball and the opponent. The youngster is also very good aerially and is an asset for his side in set-piece situations in both boxes.

Everton should not hesitate to make a move for Eray Comert in the summer and the young Swiss defender will be an ideal replacement for Kurt Zouma.
Comert would also provide some much-needed cover for Yerry Mina, who has had his trouble in recent times. He would certainly be an able successor of Phil Jagielka, who is in the twilight of his career.
