Lucas Digne enjoyed a marvellous campaign for Everton following his arrival from Barcelona. He featured in the top two for assists for the club last season that documented the left-back’s influence on the team’s play in the final third.
Apart from the Wolves game where he struggled defensively, the Frenchman has been overall solid in the new Premier League campaign.
Lucas Digne is offensively one of the best full-backs around in Europe, but defensively there are question marks at times and it’s the job of manager Marco Silva to help the player iron out his flaws.
Digne is currently having a free run in the starting XI at the moment as Leighton Baines has entered the twilight of his career. Baines signed a one-year extension earlier this year but set to turn 35 in December, it’s time for the Toffees to move on from the former England international.
To put things into perspective, Silva must sign a new left-back to replace the ageing Baines in order to cover and compete with Digne. With that in mind, Everton must make a move for Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt in January.
Last year in May, a report from the Sun had claimed that Everton were interested in signing Patrick van Aanholt. However, a deal didn’t materialise as the Toffees, instead, went for Digne.
Given that Everton have shown a lot of ambition in the transfer market and are capable of breaking into the top six this season, the Dutch defender could be tempted by the prospect of playing in Europe.
Van Aanholt, 29, has performed well for the Eagles and helped them retain their top-flight status last term under Roy Hodgson. He is one of the first names on Hodgson’s team sheet, finishing the last campaign with 36 league appearances.

The Netherlands international has been a bit of a late bloomer but he has shown his pace, agility, energy and creative abilities since his move to Palace. His work rate coupled with his top-flight experience could make him a truly elite addition to Everton’s ranks.
The Toffees need someone who could cover and compete with Digne, and Van Aanholt fits that requirement perfectly.
At 29, Van Aanholt is in the prime of his career and would be one of the smarter signings for Marco Silva’s Everton if they can land him in January.
