Everton plotting a January swoop to sign this 25-year-old dynamo from Ligue 1 is a step in the right direction for Silva

Why Everton should plot a January swoop for Morgan Sanson

In July, a report from the Liverpool Echo had claimed that Everton were interested in signing Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson, but a move didn’t materialise.

Morgan Sanson, 25, has established himself as one of the most exciting midfield players in France. He has been a regular fixture at Marseille since joining from Montpellier in January 2017, managing five goals and three assists in 33 games last season.

Marseille were willing to listen to offers for some of their players in the transfer window after they failed to qualify for the Champions League. Sanson was one of them but it looks likely the midfielder is staying put at the Ligue 1 club until January at least.

After a promising second half of the last campaign and a summer of heavy investment, Everton are tipped to break into the top-six and challenge for a European spot under Marco Silva. However, the narrative after the third game sees Silva’s side in the 12th spot, practically a point above the relegation zone.

It isn’t that the Toffees have faced tough opponents so far as they have been handed a pretty kind set of fixtures early on as they played Crystal Palace on the opening day before facing Watford and Aston Villa. They were very poor against Aston Villa and deserved to take home nothing from Villa Park last week.

Even though the Merseysiders bounced back in the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 victory over Lincoln City, there are a couple of areas that Silva must address.

One of the problems is the lack of midfield options following an unexpected injury to summer signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin in training. Plus, the midfield partnership of Andre Silva and Morgan Schneiderlin royally struggled against Aston Villa.

Fabian Delph, signed from Manchester City this summer, will have a major role to play after regaining full fitness but the 29-year-old cannot be relied upon due to injury problems.

While Tom Davies is a solid option off the bench, however, Everton could do a smart job by adding depth to their midfield area by signing Morgan Sanson in January.

Sanson is a technically gifted midfielder, known for his energy, passing range and tackling skills. The Frenchman, who can play in various roles across the midfield, is credited with his all-round abilities and creativity, never shying away from being in both attacking and defensive situations.

Silva’s system at Everton would certainly suit the 24-year-old’s style of play. In fact, Sanson’s energy, stamina, distribution and interception skills could possibly bring the best out of Andre Gomes.

Verdict

Sanson is an exciting midfielder and has all the attributes to be a force in the Premier League if he moves to England. Thus, Everton should go all out to sign him in January.
