Everton must surely keep hold of their promising 22-year-old starlet next season and here’s why

Everton opinion: Should the Toffees keep Mason Holgate?

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Everton are planning a massive overhaul of their squad in the summer. The report reveals that the Toffees only want 23 senior players in their squad and the rest will either be sold, loaned out or released in the summer.

Everton are expected to have 6 players on their summer shopping list and this would mean that a lot of players will have to leave the club in order to accommodate the new signings.

According to the report, the likes of Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Cenk Tosun among others will be sold in the summer, with loan stars Muhamed Besic, Yannick Bolasie and Sandro Ramirez also allowed to move on. One player who Everton must not sell is Mason Holgate.

The 22-year-old has been on loan at Championship side West Bromwich Albion since January and has been impressive. The former Barnsley man only featured in 5 games in the Premier League before making the switch but the Toffees could do with his services next season.

Signing Kurt Zouma permanently will take a lot of convincing with Chelsea’s transfer ban still in place. Yerry Mina’s injuries have been an area of concern and Michael Keane has been linked with a move away to Arsenal and Spurs in the summer.

Everton, even if they bring in another centre-half, will need all the help they can get, especially if they make it to the Europa League next season. Mason Holgate would be the ideal backup to their first-choice centre-halves and the youngster deserves a proper chance under Marco Silva.

Holgate has been used at right-back by the Baggies since his arrival and he has done brilliantly in his unnatural position.

The 22-year-old’s ability to adapt well in a new position would be something that Everton could do with next season, especially with right-back being a position of concern.

Conclusion

Of all the players that the Toffees plan on moving out of the club, Mason Holgate’s potential is a lot superior and the club will be making a humungous mistake by letting him go.

Holgate’s performances in his 17 starts in the Championship should not go unnoticed by Marco Silva and Everton should keep hold of him next season.
