Everton going all out to sign this 27-year-old La Liga powerhouse would help Silva fix a key problem – Agreed?

Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should go all out to sign Santiago Arias?

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias is on the radar of Everton.

The Colombian international, 27, joined Atletico Madrid from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2018 and never really managed to hold down his place in Diego Simeone’s starting XI.

He made 20 starts and five substitute appearances in La Liga for Los Rojiblancos this past season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

The report claims that Everton Director of Football, Marcel Brands, is a fan of Santiago Arias and wanted to sign the full-back for the Merseysiders in summer of 2018, having brought him to PSV Eindhoven back in 2013.

Everton enjoyed a strong finish to the 2018/19 campaign, finishing eighth in the table. Marco Silva will be eager to build on from those performances and look to break into the top-six next season.

He already has a quality squad, which is a mix of experience and youthful exuberance and a few additions over the summer would be beneficial.

While signing a bonafide goalscorer has to be the Toffees’ priority in this summer transfer window, Silva mustn’t forget to address the problems in defence.

Signing a couple of central defenders is a must due to the departures of Kurt Zouma and Phil Jagielka at the end of last season. Apart from that, the Portuguese tactician should also target a right-back to cover and compete with Seamus Coleman.

Coleman played his first full campaign since breaking his leg in a World Cup qualifier against Wales in March 2017. He struggled defensively and looked off the pace at times, although, the Ireland skipper discovered his mojo in the second half of 2018/19. But Silva needs to bring in a right-back to compete with Coleman next season, having allowed Jonjoe Kenny to join FC Schalke on a season-long loan.

That being said, signing Santiago Arias could be the right move by the Toffees. Arias may have struggled in his debut season at Atletico Madrid but he is a quality right-back with massive experience.

The Colombian operates at a very high intensity, pace, and energy, always willing to get forward and deliver crosses in the box.

The 27-year-old also possesses a top-quality right foot with great passing abilities and a mean strike. However, Arias has the tendency to get caught out defensively due to his erratic judgement and attacking mindset.

Verdict

If Silva can iron out the flaws present in Arias’ game, this will prove to be another shrewd signing for Everton, who are aiming to qualify for Europe next season.
