Everton going all out for this £20m PL star is an absolute no-brainer and Silva must get him

Everton Opinion: Why Mario Lemina would be a solid fit for the Toffees?

According to a report from The Express, Everton are one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

The Gabon international has been given the permission by the Saints to speak to other clubs this summer and is also a subject of interest to Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolves. The midfielder endured an injury-hit campaign but has attained full fitness and wants to leave Southampton this summer.

Since he is available for around £20m, Everton must attempt to beat their Premier League rivals to the signing of Mario Lemina before the transfer window slams shut.

Everton have made a couple of signings in the ongoing transfer window and while Marco Silva is working to recruit a new central defender, the club are also looking to sign a midfielder, with Idrissa Gueye set for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Gueye made 33 appearances for the Toffees in the league last season and helped them finish eighth in the Premier League table. Andre Gomes and Gueye usually featured in the double pivot and formed a good partnership in the midfield but with the latter linked with PSG, Silva must go all out to recruit a replacement.

The Everton boss now has just four experienced midfield options in Andre Gomes, Morgan Schneiderlin, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies. Realistically, Silva could do with an extra body, and Lemina could be a good signing.

Lemina signed for Southampton from Juventus in the summer of 2019 but he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations due to injury problems and inconsistency. He has played at the top level for Juventus and Marseille, and needs to move away from the Saints to get back his career on track.

An astute passer of the ball, the Gabonese is a flashy midfielder who never hesitates to fly into tackles and challenges. He’d perfectly fit into Silva’s preferred two-man midfield in a 4-2-3-1 system, offering the ability to cover the ground and control the tempo effectively.

The 25-year-old will add a lot of energy and tenacity to the Toffees’ engine room and could be an upgrade on Idrissa Gueye.

Lemina is someone who could increase competition in the Everton squad and has good Premier League experience, which is why the midfielder would be a good fit at Goodison Park.

Verdict

Everton will be looking to crack the top six next season and bringing in a quality player like Lemina could help Silva’s side improve on an eighth-placed finish they achieved last time around.
