Everton beating Celtic to land this promising 22-year-old PL starlet would be a good step towards a safe future

Everton opinion: Silva must make a move for Freddie Woodman

ESPN (h/t Newcastle Chronicle) has revealed that Everton are among the many clubs interested in a move for Newcastle United starlet Freddie Woodman.

The 22-year-old has been in great form of late, flourishing for the youth sides. An issue with his contract saw him stay at the club and not get a loan spell.

The Newcastle Chronicle has also added that Woodman refused to sign a new deal in the summer and has been left in the second string side. However, that hasn’t stopped the young shot-stopper, with the 22-year-old doing well for the reserve squad.

For Everton, it’s a move that the Toffees simply have to make in the near future, especially given the state of their squad. At the moment, manager Marco Silva has solely depended on Jordan Pickford to help him survive, as his second string goalkeeper is Maarten Stekelenburg.

The 36-year-old has struggled over the last few seasons. He arrived from Fulham in the summer of 2016 after a rather great spell with the Cottagers and with Fulham struggling in the Championship then, Stekelenburg moved on.

However, the Dutchman has now struggled to make an impact, with his age affecting his performances. The Toffees need a new shot-stopper and players don’t come as good as Freddie Woodman. The 22-year-old, despite his current stint in the Newcastle United reserve team, is a quality shot-stopper.

While he isn’t the biggest goalkeeper, Woodman makes up for it. His shot-stopping is second to none and his reflexes are down-right incredible at times. That combined with his decision-making, strength and even confidence inside the box, make him a great move.

To make things even better for Everton, the 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season, with Woodman still refusing to sign a new deal. The Toffees need to spend elsewhere to reinforce their side ahead of next season.

They’ll need a new goalscoring striker, right-back and another midfielder to help the club. However, a move for Woodman may get complicated by the fact that Arsenal, Fulham (Newcastle Chronicle) and even Celtic are in the race for the young goalkeeper. That complicates things, but it does not mean that a move is out of their reach.
