Everton Opinion: Toffees join race for Djene Dakonam – Good move?

According to Sun, Everton have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Getafe’s star defender Djene Dakonam during this transfer window.

It is claimed that the player is destined to play Premier League football next season after having a fantastic campaign in the La Liga, where he was one of the key players in El Geta’s fifth-place finish in the league. (h/t Sun)

Throughout the course of the season, they conceded only 35 goals, 11 less than Real Madrid and one less than eventual league champions Barcelona. The Spanish side have now slapped a £30m price tag on Dakonam, with Premier League clubs interested.

While the price may sway Unai Emery’s Arsenal away, it has rather opened the door for Marco Silva’s Everton, who are in this market for a new centre-back. Here’s why this could be a right move for the Blues:

Dakonam’s versatility could be of great use

It is understood that Chelsea would keep hold of Kurt Zouma (h/t Sun). This means Everton will be down to two senior centre-backs ahead of next season – Michael Keane and Yerry Mina. Phil Jagielka has left the club after serving for an umpteen amount of years.

Hence, the Toffees are right in entering the market to sign a new centre-back. Hence, they should take advantage of Arsenal’s lack of investment, and make a bid for Djene Dakonam.

The 27-year-old is a fantastic centre-back with great physical strength, impeccable game-reading abilities, rapid recovery pace and good passing accuracy from the back.

Furthermore, the best thing about him is his versatility. Predominantly a centre-back, Dakonam is comfortable operating in defensive midfield or as a right-back if required.

Conclusion

Hence, if Arsenal hesitate in making a move, Everton should take this as their golden chance and bid for Dakonam as soon as possible. The Getafe star would certainly improve their backline next season onwards.
