European spot on the horizon? – Bournemouth should sign this 6ft 2in German defender in the summer to solve woes at the back

Bournemouth Opinion: Why Eddie Howe should sign Christopher Schindler?

Huddersfield Town find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League, having endured a horrendous run of form that has left them 14 points adrift of safety.

But there has been a noticeable change under new manager Jan Siewert, who clearly wants the Terriers to be much more attack-minded and quick in the transition than in the final year or so under David Wagner. However, the truth remains Huddersfield has seen just a solitary point taken from the last 13 games.

It’ll take something astounding for Town to escape relegation this season. Relegation to the Championship could see the Terriers lose some quality players in the summer. With that being in mind, Bournemouth should target defender Christopher Schindler.

Bournemouth are not in a good run of form at the moment, having lost their way a bit following injuries to key players. But credit to Eddie Howe for working on a tight budget and building a squad that is exciting to watch every time on the pitch.

There is enough room for improvement for the Cherries and Howe, after doing such a good job at the Vitality for few years now, should show more ambition while signing players in the next transfer window.

One area he should reinforce is the defence, with skipper Simon Francis having entered the twilight years of his career. Francis has been a brilliant servant for Bournemouth but at 34, he has regally slowed down since the last year or so and currently is out with cruciate ligament injury.

Hence, it’s important for Howe to bring in at least a couple of defenders ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Christopher Schindler would fit the bill perfectly at Bournemouth and provide cover as well as competition for the likes of Nathan Ake, Steve Cook and January recruit Chris Mepham.

Schindler played a crucial role in helping Huddersfield Town earn promotion to the Premier League a couple of years ago. Although Huddersfield could be back to the Championship, he has been a consistent performer at the back.

Standing at 6ft 2in tall, the German is strong in the air, and plays with a certain kind of tenacity and aggression that makes him a really tough player to come up against. He also possesses fantastic organisational and leadership skills – something that Bournemouth have lacked in defence over the past couple of years.

Conclusion

Come what may at the end of the campaign, Howe should bolster his squad further. Bournemouth’s backline has been suspect at times this campaign, and Howe needs a presence who is mobile and can read the game well.

That’s why a signing like Schindler plus a few others could help the Cherries break the mould and challenge for a place in Europe.
