European Golden Shoe Race: Erling Haaland takes the lead over Messi but still behind CR7

With half of the 2019/2020 season yet to be played, the race for one of the most coveted prizes -the European Golden Shoe has got tougher with several top players vying to get their hands on it.

Borussia Dortmund’s new signing, 19-year-old Erling Haaland announced his arrival in Bundesliga with a hat-trick over Augsburg at the weekend. He came on as a substitute for Lukasz Piszczek in the 56th minute. It just took him 23 minutes to score thrice and helped the German side to a 5-3 win.

In the process, the Norwegian has overtaken Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who also scored against Granada, and has 30 points to his credit. Messi’s 14 goals so far have earned him 28 points keeping him in 8th position in the race.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo who was uncharacteristically off the pace last season is currently above the likes of both Haaland and Messi in the 5th position with 32 points. Though he did not start the season well, he is again proving to be a headache for defender in Serie A after scoring in 7 straight league games since December.

However, Lazio’s Ciro Immobile has proved to be lethal in front of the goal in this campaign with 23 goals to his name so far. He has overtaken the likes of Bundesliga’s lethal duo Robert Lewandowski and Timo Werner and is leading the chart with 46 points.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has been in scintillating form this season and is above Ronaldo with 17 goals to his name.

With the European Golden Shoe race well and truly underway, it would be difficult to say which player will get his hands on to the European Shoe, which the Argentine talisman Messi has won it six times.

Premier League’s top strikers Sergio Aguero, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marcus Rashford have also been scoring at a decent rate. And the trio has also fitted into the top ten goalscorers in the European list.
