Why Mbaye Diagne would be a brilliant addition to Marco Silva’s Everton

According to a report from Sabah, Everton are interested in signing Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne. (h/t the Liverpool Echo)

Mbaye Diagne, 27, scored 21 goals for Kasimpasa in the first half of the previous campaign, and that earned him a January move to Galatasaray, where he continued to find the back of the net with regularity. He scored 10 times for his new side in the second half of the season, taking his total tally to 31 goals over the course of the campaign.

Since he only moved in January, the Senegalese striker is under contract with Galatasaray for a further four years. If Everton do decide to make a bid, they may have to stump up a lot of money in order to get the Turkish side to let him leave.

Everton struggled for goals last season with none of Cenk Tosun or Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivering the goods consistently. That forced Marco Silva to play Richarlison in an unfamiliar position of leading the line, but it soon became clear the Brazilian is at his best when deployed on the left.

Hence, it’s high time that Silva signed a centre-forward who could come in and solve the goalscoring problems at Goodison Park. To that end, the Toffees could take a gamble on Mbaye Diagne.

At 27 and with spells in Hungary, France, Belgium and China under his belt, Diagne has been somewhat of a journeyman so far but he has earned the chance to really establish himself in a top league after a couple of outstanding years in front of goal.

Blessed with plenty of pace and power, the Senegalese is a commanding presence in the final third and can win a lot of 50-50 aerial duels using his strength and physicality inside the opposition penalty area.

He is excellent at holding up play and can bring his teammates into the game, whilst using his pace to make clever runs in behind the opposition defence. Diagne can be a real handful in the box due to his aggressive nature and brute force.

The acquisition of a player of Diagne’s quality will improve Silva’s attacking options significantly at Goodison Park. He will not only add a lot of quality to the Toffees frontline but will also increase competition for places within the Everton squad.

Truly, the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard and Richarlison would love having a physical and pacey presence like Diagne making runs in the box.

Verdict

Recruiting Diagne could help Silva’s Everton compete on all fronts and put an end to their long wait for some silverware next season.
