Enough is enough: Southampton must offload their 27-year-old flop for the sake of good

Why must Southampton sell Jordy Clasie at all costs – a good move for both parties

Jordy Clasie has been one of the flop signings for Southampton among several very good ones. The Dutch midfielder arrived at the St. Mary’s in 2015 under the management of his compatriot Ronald Koeman.

However, he failed to make a significant impact to force himself into a regular starting spot in the team. The 27-year-old will now get a chance to revitalise his career by returning to Feyenoord, a club where spent four seasons at, between 2010 and 2015.

Clasie was loaned out to Club Brugge last season in order to gain some valuable game time and possibly come back in the reckoning. But the midfielder couldn’t impress the Saints’ fraternity much, and now his future at the club is non-existent under the management of Mark Hughes.

Here’s why Southampton will do well to sell the player and get some money for spending elsewhere:

Selling Clasie will be a sensible move

The Dutchman can play as one of the central midfielders or as a double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Clasie is a diminutive player who relies more on ball possession and incisive passing, however, he failed to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League and got shrugged off the ball too often. This became quite a frustrating view for the Saints fan to watch.

At the time of his arrival, the 27-year-old was touted as a shrewd business by Southampton as they got a ball-possession player in midfield. But as it turned out, Dutchman failed to grab his chance and was initially out-favoured by Koeman himself.

Now with Saints massively escaping relegation last season under Hughes, keeping Clasie won’t make any sense. Instead, they should sell him and invest the money in another weak position.

Conclusion

Southampton’s recruitment and academy products have always been a thing to admire since their gradual rise to the Premier League. However, the debacle of Clasie in English top-flight explains to us that this league is quite tough to adapt if you are not physically built to play the high-intensity game.

Getting out of England and going to the Netherlands will be a good move for the player as well. It will enable him to play in his native country and perhaps, regain his lost reputation as a tidy midfield player.
