Enough is enough: Newcastle would be clever to use the chance to offload £5m flop in the summer and Benitez has to do it

Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies keep or offload Joselu?

The Chronicle Live has reported that Newcastle United striker Joselu has been a subject of interest from the Chinese Super League. Currently warming the bench at Newcastle United, the former Stoke City striker has failed to make an impact and has thoroughly underwhelmed since his £5million (Daily Mail) move to the Magpies.

The 28-year-old has been so terrible for the Magpies that it could have been impossible to sell him and break even on the transfer. But now, with the interest from China, things could get better for the club and maybe they could get a little extra.

Previous fees include £5.5million for Nico Yennaris (Sky Sports), £12million for Marouane Fellaini (BBC) and £5.9million for Odion Ighalo (BBC) among others. It shows that the Chinese clubs are more than willing to spend on players from Europe and more importantly, from England.

They need that star presence to power their side towards victory and increase the entertainment value of the league, adding the likes of Oscar, Carlos Tevez and even Yannick Carrasco in recent years. For Newcastle United, this is a deal that they really have to make.

Since his move to Newcastle United, the 28-year-old Joselu has thoroughly struggled. He was supposed to be the Magpies’ great hope but instead, failed to make any impact, with Rafael Benitez having to depend on others to help save Newcastle.

His first season saw Joselu score just four goals in four separate games, missing the mark in his other 28 appearances and eventually, the former Liverpool boss had to drop him.

Salomon Rondon’s arrival on loan further worsened things for the Spaniard, with just five starts in the Premier League this season, scoring just two goals.

Both those goals came within the first three games of the season and since then, the former Stoke City man has failed to find the net. This is rather surprising given that Joselu is from Real Madrid’s academy and flourished in the Bundesliga before a move to Stoke City.

Clearly, he needs a new start as the Premier League hasn’t been nice to him so far. With China involved, it does allow the Spaniard to get one last pay-day before he retires.

Conclusion

Letting Joselu go in the summer is the best move that Newcastle United can make. Both sides need a new start and this move will help. Not only will the player get a chance to earn the big bucks but Newcastle can get enough money to strengthen their team.
