Enough is enough: Man United must offload this Van Gaal signing and land this £65m star instead

Harry Maguire could be the solution to Mourinho’s defensive dilemma

Manchester United have been busy in the summer, making a couple of signings to bolster their squad. Jose Mourinho will be aiming to make a strong return to the Premier League after the club fell widely short of their high standards last season.

Despite bringing a number of high-profile players over the last two years, United have failed to mount regular title challenges. The former Chelsea manager did win the Europa League with the Reds but will be aiming for more success this time around.

Mourinho has decided that the club need a new centre-back this summer. Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof were far too inconsistent last season and Phil Jones was often out injured. The Portuguese manager is said to be in the market for a new central defender as he aims to improve the depth in the squad.

The Red Devils have already signed FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and the club have now been linked with Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing the England defender, who has been impressive for both club and country over the last year.

Maguire made the move from Hull City to the King Power Stadium for a reported fee of around £17million after the Tigers were relegated to the Championship.

He has since gone on to establish himself as a regular starter for the Foxes under Claude Puel. But the defender’s value has also skyrocketed. Leicester City rate the player at £65million, which means Jose Mourinho is going to have to offload one of his own stars.

Reports suggest that the chosen one is Marcos Rojo. The defender has made just 68 appearances since his arrival in 2014. Rojo’s Old Trafford career has been far too inconsistent and blighted by injury troubles. The Argentinian was only able to muster 9 appearances in the Premier League last season. Mourinho could use the funds from Rojo’s transfer to sign the Leicester defender.

Maguire, on the other hand, has been a rock at the back for the Foxes. The 25-year-old played all 38 games for Leicester last season, proving his worth as one of the best defenders in the league. He also scored 2 goals and provided 4 assists.

The former Hull City defender also offers an attacking element, posing a huge aerial threat from set-pieces and crosses. He was also impressive for the Three Lions in Russia as they finished 4th.

Harry Maguire would be a massive signing by Manchester United and should see them ready for the new season. Mourinho should certainly offload Marcos Rojo and make the move for Maguire. The arrival of the Leicester man could see Manchester United’s already rigid backline become stronger.
