Why Selling Paul Pogba Is The Right Solution For Manchester United
Speculations about Paul Pogba’s impending exit from Old Trafford have been doing the rounds but as per a report from The Mirror, Manchester United could sanction the sale of the Frenchman to bring in fresh recruits worth £200million, during the summer.
Straight off the bat, it sounds like a fairytale (or Pep Guardiola’s to-do list) but at the essence of it, Pogba’s sale might actually benefit the club.
Regardless of the truth in the transfer claims, the Red Devils must focus on replacing Pogba with a player who is dedicated and committed enough to make a difference.
United shelled out a huge sum of money to acquire the former Juventus star’s signature but he is yet to live up to his lofty billing. In fact, it is safe to suggest that Pogba is just another player brought in by the club to fuel their tremendous merchandise sales across the world.
While the merchandise sales are good for the club, they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Ultimately, a player’s effectiveness on the field is of utmost importance and on that front, Pogba has done little justice.
We have seen flashes of brilliance from him but he needs to deliver on a consistent basis. Though it’s not fair to expect a player to put in match-winning performances every day, Pogba hasn’t done enough to produce consistency. Apart from consistency, the midfielder has displayed a lack of professionalism and commitment too.
Earlier, the £290,000-a-week Frenchman was deployed in a deep midfield role and it limited his power while going forward. The club eventually signed Nemanja Matic from Chelsea to bring defensive stability to the midfield. Though Matic has been phenomenal for United, Pogba continues to struggle.
Given that Mourinho often uses a 4-2-3-1, he has used Ander Herrera along with Matic in central midfield and that did work out despite the former’s lack of form.
However, during the fateful game against Tottenham at Wembley, Pogba had to drop a bit deeper in Herrera’s absence and he was caught out of place within the first few seconds, which gifted Spurs the opening goal. They won 2-0 and the match was perhaps the greatest example of why Pogba is not the one for defensive responsibility.
Thus, United might be better off investing money on a different player. There is absolutely no doubt that Pogba needs to leave Old Trafford.
