English Premier League Weekly Round Up : A Brief Report of Each Game

EPL was finally back this Saturday and it definitely was back with a BANG. 26 goals in 8 games on Saturday and 4 on Sunday was a significant statement of how different the Premier League is compared to the Internationals.

Tottenham 2-4 Chelsea :

League Leaders maintain their lead and make a big statement in the weeks Biggest Game.

  • A great game : It was truly a wonderful game. There was great football and lots of great individual performances but there had to be a winner and that winner was Chelsea by two clear goals. It was a little bit unfair on Tottenham, but they contributed to what was truly a magnificent game. The spirit of Spurs really tested Chelsea but there is substance as well as style under manager Roberto di Matteo and this was a very impressive performance.
  • Mata Magic : The omission of Mata from the Spain squad because “he was surplus to requirements” as stated by Vincent Del Bosquqe happened to be  a blessing in disguise for the the Blues. 2 goals and an assist made him the man of the match and the dangerous trio of Mata-Hazard-Oscar are now the biggest threat of the league.
  • Revenge failed : Despite AVB claiming he did not want any revenge, he would have been one of the happiest men had Spurs beaten Chelsea. Unfortunately the Blues had different ideas. Walker was unable to contain Mata and he had to face the wrath of his own fans on twitter. There was not much AVB could do or tell his players. Chelsea were just too good for them.
  • Cahill and Sturridge scored the other two goals for Chelsea while Defoe and Gallas scored for Spurs.

Swansea 2-1 Wigan :

  • Spanish duo Pablo Hernandez and Miguel Michu steer Swansea to a first win in six league games as Wigan’s poor form continues at the Liberty Stadium.
  • Not a very entertaining half was shadowed by the free flowing second half. A crazy span of 4 minutes saw all the 3 goals of the game with Swansea going 2-0 up by 67′  and Boyce scored in the 69th’ for Wigan.
  • Swansea needed this win as they take on Man City and Chelsea next. As for Wigan, they drop down to the 16th spot.

Fulham 1-0 Aston Villa :

  • Chris Baird’s late strike ensures Aston Villa’s miserable start to the Premier League season continues.
  • Fulham are turning Cavern Cottage into a fortress as they now have 32 points of a possible 42 in their last 14  home games.
  • There were rumors of a rift between Bent and manager Paul Lambert and Lambert started Bent for this game just to show everyone that all was fine in the club. Sadly Bent received absolutely no service and Fulham deserved to win the game.
  • And it means Villa are now winless in their last 12 Premier League away matches, spanning nine months, since beating Black Country rivals Wolves in January

Liverpool 1-0 Reading :

Sterling scores the only goal of the game and yes, The Reds finally win at Anfield.

  • One could see this coming : Not just the Liverpool victory but also the goal by Raheem Sterling. He also becomes the second youngest player to score for Liverpool.
  • Liverpool dominated throughout and deservedly went ahead on 29′ . Suarez’ through ball from the half way line saw a clear path for Sterling ahead and he made no mistake in putting the Reds up.
  • Though the Reds dominated the entire game, they could just not get that second goal despite having numerous chances. There was certainly uneasiness among the players and the fans as Reading had a couple of chances of their own. After a series of chances on either end for Shelvy, Skrtel, Johnson, Gerrard, Le Fondre and Roberts.
  • There was a relief in the stadium on hearing the final whistle and Liverpool look to have got back onto track after a dismal start to the season.

Manchester United 4-2 Stoke :

Rooney scores 3 goals in a seesaw game which saw United snatch the victory at the end.

  • It was Paul Scholes’ 400th Premier League start but the entire attention was on whether Rooney and Rvp could play together or not. Rooney was yet to score a goal this season and one would have thought he’d broken the jinx on the 11th minute but sadly it was an own goal.
  • Stoke should have been 2-0 up when Adam fired a low shot but De Gea somehow managed to push it away.
  • But then United started to dominate possession and RVP’s superb cross met Rooney’s head and he had finally scored an official goal this season FOR United.
  • Once Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck were on target to give United the advantage , it looked like it would be a comfortable victory for the hosts.
  • Rio Ferdinand was questionable for Stoke’s 2nd goal and United would really love to have Vidic and Jones back in their squad. But Rooney rounded the game up on 65 minutes as he made it 4-2.
  • United keep pace with Chelsea and the two title hopefuls meet next week.

West Brom 1-2 Manchester City :

Mr “Super Sub” does it yet again for his club against all the odds.

  • The game did not start as City hoped for when Milner was sent of in the first half and they were very fortunate not to be redced to 9 after the referee was very liberal on an already booked Mario Balotelli.
  •  Brom, as expected took the lead on 67 minutes making it look like a long night for the defending Champions. But substitute Dzeko scored two goals : one on 80′ and one on 90′ to seal a late comeback for the Citizens.
  • The loss was harsh on Brom but they’re still in hunt of European glory as they are in the 6th position now.

West Ham 4-1 Southampton :

A dominant victory thanks to a Brace from Mark Noble sees the Hammers in the 7th place.

  • This was West Hams fourth victory of the season and Southampton’s 6th loss.
  • It was a completely one sided affair which saw the 2 new promoted teams play each other.
  • There were also goals from Modibo Maiga and Kevin Nolan while Southampton hit a consolation strike through Adam Lallana.

Norwich 1-0 Arsenal :

A very hard working Norwich see off a dismal performance by the Gunners.

  • Holt scored the only goal of the game on 19 minutes  when he slotted in after keeper Vito Mannone had parried Alexander Tettey’s shot.
  • The home side had conceded nine goals in their last two matches but Norwich were much better defensively in this game.
  • Arsenal’s main threat Cazorla was nullified and silenced by Norwich and hence the Gunners looked clueless. They had no urgency and looked lost.
  • Arsenal drop to 9th and are 10 points behind leaders Chelsea already while Norwich leap out from the relegation zone and move into 15th place.

Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle :

Sunderland score a late equalizer against 10 men Newcastle in the TYNE-WEAR DERBY

  • It was a perfect start for the Toons in the 3rd minute as Cabaye scored in the third minute.
  • It was going well for them until Tiote was sent off midway through the first half.
  • That changed the complexion of the game and it was all Sunderland then on.
  • A late own goal by Demba Ba from a set piece saw the teams share the spoils in the North-East Derby.

QPR 1-1 EVERTON

Another game on Sunday where a team was reduced to 10 men and the game ended a draw.

This was QPR’s best opportunity to have secured their first victory of the season having reduced Everton to 10 men.

Junior Hoillet scores after running for 60 yards : After his keeper-Cesar punches away the ball from a corner, he picks up the ball and runs and runs and despite having options he goes for goal. The ball finally goes in taking a deflection of Baines on the way.

Julio Cesar scored an embarrassing own goal to put Everton level.

But Steven Pienar was sent off with 30 minutes remaining and that spiced things up but Everton held on firm to salvage a point.

Everton could have actually won the game when strong claims of penalty for a foul on Nika Jelavic were turned down.
