Ejaria and Murphy to start – Strongest 4-2-3-1 Rangers line-up to face Aberdeen

Predicted Rangers line-up to face Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership

Rangers will kick off their 2018/19 Scottish Premiership campaign with a trip to the Pittodrie as they take on Aberdeen on Sunday.

Under new manager Steven Gerrard, the Gers are yet to taste defeat and have a resilient look about themselves. Having qualified for the third round of the UEFA Europa League qualifying stages quite comfortably, the Light Blues will now be hoping to translate that form into the league competition and begin things off with a victory over the Dons.

Ahead of the encounter on Sunday, let’s take a look at how Gerrard might set his team out at the Pittodrie.

Probable Rangers XI

Manager: Steven Gerrard

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Allan McGregor (GK)

The 36-year-old has firmly established himself as the first-choice following his return to the club this summer. A definite starter.

James Tavernier (RB)

After an encouraging performance in the midweek game against Osijek, club captain James Tavernier will be hoping to carry on in the same vein on Sunday.

James Tavernier

Connor Goldson (CB)

The 25-year-old centre-half has been in exceptional form since joining the club this summer. Has looked extremely solid and comfortable and will want to kick things off in the Premiership in a similar manner.

Nikola Katic (CB)

The Croatian defender will be high on confidence after having scored the goal that sent Rangers through to the next qualifying round in Europe on Thursday. Should partner Goldson in the heart of the defence.

Jon Flanagan (LB)

The former Liverpool man has been preferred over Declan John so far and the player has repaid his faith with some solid displays. Should start at left-back.

Ryan Jack

Ryan Jack (CM)

The Scottish midfielder has been the Gers’ best player in the past few games, with some assertive displays in the middle of the park. A definite starter.

Lassana Coulibaly (CM)

The 22-year-old has shown glimpses of potential since his move to the Ibrox. Likely to continue alongside Jack in the two-man midfield.

Daniel Candeias (RW)

The Portuguese winger had an impressive outing against Osijek in the midweek fixture and that should see him get the nod over Josh Windass on the right flank.

Ovie Ejaria (CAM)

The on-loan Liverpool man has the ability to become the creative hub of the team in the final third. Should start against the Dons.

Jamie Murphy

Jamie Murphy (LW)

The former Brighton & Hove Albion winger did not feature on Thursday but should return to the starting XI ahead of Ryan Kent.

Alfredo Morelos (ST)

The Colombian forward has impressed in the past couple of games after having drawn a lot of flak for his poor finishing. Should hold onto his place ahead of Umar Sadiq.
