A Dream Newcastle United XI For The Premier League Next Season

Newcastle United have made it back to the Premier League after earning the promotion and doing it in style, by winning the EFL Championship title on the final day of the season.

There were a few doubts over Rafael Benitez staying at the club, but now that the Spaniard has confirmed that he will be staying put at the St. James’ Park, planning will be afoot to build a team that can compete strongly in the English top division in the upcoming campaign.

Numerous players have been linked with a move to the Magpies in the past few months and now that they are back in the Premier League and are set for a huge windfall due to the promotion, they have the means to attract the big names again in the summer.

Here we compile a dream playing XI for Newcastle, comprising of their transfer targets for the upcoming season:

The Dream Newcastle XI:

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Manager: Rafael Benitez

Karl Darlow (GK)

The 26-year old has done exceptionally well over the course of the season and should keep his spot between the sticks in the Premier League.

Peter Ankersen (RB)

The right-back has been in fine form for FC Copenhagen since making his loan move from Red Bull Salzburg permanent in the summer and has been linked with a move to Newcastle along with the likes of Galatasaray and Valencia. Has the ability to become the first-choice ahead of DeAndre Yedlin and Vurnon Anita.

Ryan Shawcross (CB)

One of the key targets for Benitez over the summer, the 29-year old Stoke defender will come in with plenty of experience and proven abilities in the Premier League and may even wear the captain’s armband ahead of Jamaal Lascelles.

Ciaran Clark (CB)

Has been one of the best signings of the season in the Championship. He will retain his place at the heart of the defence.

Paul Dummett (LB)

The left-back has been one of the most consistent performers for the Magpies in the Championship. And while there are a few who feel he doesn’t have the quality to achieve similar success in the top flight, he deserves a chance to prove himself.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM)

One of the best midfielders in the Championship this season, the Englishman is immovable from the Newcastle midfield.

Fabian Delph (CM)

The Manchester City man is finding first-team football hard to come by and he might be tempted to move. He has the quality to walk straight into the Magpies’ starting XI.

Matt Ritchie (RW)

Another stand-out performer from the season past, Ritchie is sure to keep his place on the right-flank.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Tom Cairney (CAM)

The Fulham man has been chased for quite some time by the Magpies, but his signature will depend upon how the Cottagers fare in the playoffs. If they earn that final promotion place, it is unlikely that he might join. But Newcastle could definitely use someone of his ilk to create chances in the attacking third.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (LW)

Another deal that will hinge on the club’s fortunes, Sigurdsson’s move will depend on whether Swansea are able to survive the drop or not. Interest from other clubs might complicate things, but he can turn this Newcastle side into a very strong outfit.

Dwight Gayle (ST)

He may have struggled for Palace in the top division but would love to get a chance to prove himself at this stage again. And judging by his performance this season, there is no reason why Benitez shouldn’t back him to deliver in the Premier League.
