France Football hands out the award to the best footballer over the past year
Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba was named as the new Ambassador for the Ballon d’Or.
France Football hands out the annual award to the best football player over the past year and some several greats have landed the crown.
Drogba joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2004 and became an instant hit under Jose Mourinho.
The Ivorian was a brilliant finisher with his feet but had incredible power and aerial ability too. The 41-year-old spent close to eight years with the Blues before trying his luck out in China and Galatasaray.
Drogba then returned to Stamford Bridge for another season in 2014 before moving to the Montreal Impact and ending his career at Phoenix Rising.
The 41-year-old never won the Ballon d’Or during his playing time with the Blues, but he was one of the best strikers in the world under Mourinho.
Trophies galore for Drogba
The Ivorian lifted four Premier League titles during his time in England and won four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League.
He won the Turkish league, Cup and Super Cup with Galatasaray and landed several individual honours for his performances in Europe.
The former Chelsea star has been a great ambassador of the sport and has done a lot of charity work for his home continent and the UN too.
The 41-year-old’s highest finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings was fourth in 2007, and this season it could be a Premier League star landing the trophy.
Virgil van Dijk has been excellent for Liverpool over the past 18 months, and led them to the Champions League last season.
