Derby County have struck gold by loaning out this 20-year-old on a one-month deal and here is why it’s a wise move

Derby County have done the right thing by sending Max Hunt out on loan

According to Derbyshire Live, Derby County defender Max Hunt has joined National League side Aldershot Town on a one-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old, who made his move to Pride Park from non-league outfit Matlock Town back in January 2018, has featured largely for the Rams U-23 side in the Premier League 2, making a total of 19 appearances.

Yet to earn his senior professional debut for Derby County, the promising starlet is held in high regard by the youth coaches at Pride Park and the Rams have apparently decided to give him a taste of some hardcore physical football by securing a loan move to Aldershot Town.

Now, we all know how the game is played in the National League and Hunt’s one-month stay at The Electrical Services Stadium could see him return to Pride Park stronger and fitter than ever.

A spell in non-league football is likely to harden him up as a player, both physically and mentally, and, while the fans might have hoped for the youngster to go out on loan to a League One or a League Two club, Derby’s decision to loan him out to Aldershot Town certainly makes a lot of sense.

A regular for Darren Wassall’s U-23 side since his arrival at Pride Park, Hunt is not quite in the first-team picture at Derby County, with the likes of Richard Keogh and new signings Matthew Clarke and Krystian Bielik all above him in the pecking order.

The 20-year-old’s performances in the National League is unlikely to be taken into consideration by senior manager Phillip Cocu but the youngster’s short-term loan spell in non-league football is apparently just another step in his development, as he looks to break into the first-team in the near future.

To put things into perspective, Derby County need to be careful with their handling of Max Hunt, given that he seemingly has the potential and the talent to go on and challenge for a first-team spot in the years to come.

They need to oversee his development closely and the Rams might as well have a future star on their hands if he goes on to fulfil his promise. Standing at 6ft. 6 inches, he is already a giant in the making and Derby will be hoping that the best is yet to come from him.

Ideally, the next step in Hunt’s development when he returns from Aldershot would be a loan stint at some club in the third or fourth tier, although he might find himself fast-tracked into the senior ranks in case of an injury crisis.

Cocu built a big reputation for himself back in his days at PSV Eindhoven for his proficiency in working with young and promising players and the fans at Pride Park have already seen glimpses of that, with the likes of Bielik, Kieran Dowell and Matt Clarke making their move to the club this summer.
