Dembele & Bobby Reid to sign for Brighton, Murphy sold: Hughton’s ideal transfer window

Brighton are one of at least eight clubs who could go down to the Championship from this point and therefore are in heavy need of new signings when the January transfer window opens.

Chris Hughton’s side have done relatively well so far, sitting 12th in the table with 21 points from 20 games. However, the alternative view is that they are just 4 points above the relegation zone and have a goal difference of -10.

Despite this goal difference, they are not an open side and would have had more success if they were better going forward.  Their strikers have been ineffective so far and it’s easy to see why they’ve been linked with Celtic duo Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths.

The former is Brighton’s chief target for next month and while the move is a downgrade from last year when the likes of Chelsea were credited with an interest in the former Fulham man, Brighton have the cash to fund the deal and it would take the player where he wants to be; the English Premier League.

Bristol City’s Bobby Reid is another forward player who has been strongly linked with the Seagulls and once more, he would bring what is needed to Chris Hughton’s attacking line.

Moussa Dembele

Anthony Knockaert has not been as effective as some thought he would be at this level while others in the squad already had the look of Championship fodder to be brutally honest.

One way to help broker a deal for Moussa Dembele would be for the south coast club to offer winger Jamie Murphy to Celtic. The Glasgow club will look for reinforcements this winter given that Rangers are slowly but surely closing the gap between the clubs while the Hoops also have a tough Europa League campaign to look forward to.

Murphy heading north may well be what could close a deal for Dembele, with Brendan Rodgers rumoured to be interested in him, though one player also rumoured to be interesting other parties is defender Lewis Dunk. Dunk always looked like a Premier League player and most would say he’s now proving it, though with West Ham circling around, fans should not take it for granted that he’ll be at the Amex come February.

Given West Ham’s own position, that deal looks unlikely, though Brighton should not dismiss the possibility of one of their best players being poached by another Premier League club.

Best outcome:

In: Moussa Dembele (Celtic) & Bobby Reid (Bristol City)

Out: Jamie Murphy (Celtic)

Keep: Lewis Dunk
