Decline Of Chelsea FC – An Overview

From European Champions to Europa league contenders, Chelsea have been a sinking ship this season. With ‘Rafa Out’ banners all over the stands, Chelsea fans signing to the tune  ’Roman Abramovich, is this what you want?’ and reports saying Avram Grant could be the new manager, we will try to find out the possible reasons for the decline of CFC.

Rafa Benitez is surely not a fan favorite

Lack of stability:  Stability is key for the long-term future of a football club, and Chelsea are one of the most unstable in terms of coaching staff in Europe. One might think that they should have stuck it out with AVB for a few seasons to be honest and see where he lead them, but it didn’t happen and as a result their transition period has only just come this season, hence their recent and inconsistent performances.

Sure, they won the CL and the FA Cup last season, but the changing of managers means new players coming in, promising youth players get sold (such as Miroslav Stoch, Gokhan Tore) due to lack of chances and the deadwood doesn’t get cleared. Also, the players have to keep adapting to different tactics and methods, which means there’s no time to gel as a team.

Poor transfer business:

Torres and Obi Mikel have not been good in a blue shirt

Back in 2006, Chelsea had one of the best spines in world football, with Petr Cech, John Terry, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard and DidierDrogba running the show for the club as the elite players in their respective positions in the world. Since then, and presently as replacements, they have John Obi Mikel playing where Makelele did and have recently replaced powerhouse DidierDrogba with Fernando Torres – two players who aren’t anywhere near as good as their predecessors.

To make matters worse, Frank Lampard is in his twilight years and is no-where near the level he once was in terms of ability and fitness, and losing a player who offered countless assists and 20 goals a season consistently for a decade is going to hurt any team.

At the moment, Chelsea are trying to implement a new passing style with new young players, who are still trying to adapt the both the club’s new philosophy and the fast pace and physicality that comes with Premier League football. A transitional phase like this is very important in the evolution and development of a football club, and needs stability; something Chelsea severely lack at the moment (Rafa Benitez is their 3rd manager this year alone).

Roman has to change it around if he wants the continued support of his fans

Chelsea are in a real mess at the moment, and the poor boardroom decisions by owner Roman Abramovich, for whatever reason, decided to sack fan favourite Roberto Di Matteo only 3 months into the season and replaced him with a manager who the fans hate, which in turn unsettled the squad even further and the morale of both the team and the fans is at it’s lowest in years; the fact it’s the worst start after 15 games in the Premier League in the Abramovich era speaks volumes.

What does Chelsea need at the moment ?

– A new long term manager – who gets the backing of his owner and fans.

– A definite replacement for Fernando Torres.

– A defensive midfielder to replace Essien.
