Crystal Palace opinion: The Eagles should snap up Simon Mignolet

According to a report in the Metro, Crystal Palace are looking to sign Belgian international and current Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The price being quoted is £8m, which, in this inflated market, would be a fantastic addition for the Eagles.

Mignolet has a great pedigree in the Premier League, having been at Liverpool for 6 years and 3 years before that at Sunderland. 4

His time at Liverpool was quite inconsistent and he probably fell just short of the expectations that come with playing for a club like Liverpool, who always have ambitions of winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

However, that shouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that he’ll be a fantastic addition to the Selhurst Park outfit.

Roy Hodgson will be hoping he can strengthen his backline after the funds received from the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Wan-Bissaka was their player of the year and was a massive factor in Palace having a pretty solid defence last season.

Vicente Guaita was used for most of the second-half of last season and did a fine job but will need some competition. Wayne Hennessy has been off the boil for a while and should be seen as third-choice or be sold.

Mignolet would come immediately into the squad and be the first-choice. Mignolet is an outstanding shot-stopper but is prone to the odd error. He usually makes up for his errors by pulling off unexpected saves. He’s also decent on the ball but that’s not his strongest attribute.

Palace don’t usually build their attack from the back anyway so this attribute won’t be required as much.

Mignolet is also a massive presence unlike Guaita and will is very good at holding onto balls in the air. His international experience would also be vital for the other players in the side. There are many examples of goalkeepers who’ve done very well in the Premier League after leaving a big side.

Mignolet can take inspiration from the likes of Lucasz Fabianski and Ben Foster, who’ve improved massively since moving on from Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

He wouldn’t cost much as stated earlier and Palace can then look at reinforcing other areas of the squad like the forward position and right-back position.

Conclusion

Roy Hodgson has steadied the ship at Selhurst Park and there’s every chance for Palace to make those European places if they can find some home form.
