Crystal Palace signing this 23-year-old Ajax product would help them replace the big Wan-Bissaka void

Why Kenny Tete would be a smart addition to Crystal Palace

Back in June 2017, a report from Telegraph had claimed Crystal Palace were interested in signing Kenny Tete, who was then plying his trade for Ajax. However, he left Ajax to join Lyon in the 2017 summer transfer window instead.

Kenny Tete, 23, was with the famed Ajax academy from the age of 10. He rose through the youth system before signing his first professional contract in 2012. The Netherlands international found opportunities hard to come by last season under Bruno Genesio, who preferred Rafael ahead of him at right-back.

That limited Tete to just 13 Ligue 1 appearances in 2018/19, however, things have changed this time around, with the versatile defender making nine Ligue 1 appearances so far. Nevertheless, Crystal Palace should rekindle their interest in Tete during the January transfer window in a bid to solve their defensive problems.

As far as Crystal Palace are concerned, they failed to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer. Wan-Bissaka was outstanding last year for Palace and is considered one of the best defensive right-backs in the Premier League. He has been one of Manchester United’s best players in an otherwise dreary start to their new campaign.

Wan-Bissaka’s departure has left a huge void in the Eagles squad, with Roy Hodgson starting the new season with Joel Ward at right-back. Ward has been decent but question marks remain over his defensive abilities. While Martin Kelly remains an option as well, Hodgson shouldn’t reject the idea of filling the big-sized gap of Wan-Bissaka when the transfer market reopens.

Standing at 5ft 11in, Tete is a utility player who can play anywhere across the defence. That should be a big plus for Palace as Hodgson would be able to use the player as per his tactics and system.

The Dutchman is a very good attacking full-back with good speed, energy and crossing ability. He backs his ability to beat his marker and deliver teasing crosses into the box for his teammates to feast upon.

The 23-year-old has also impressed with the ability to play out from the back. He is equipped with quick feet that allow him to evade the press while his tactical sense enables him to find the right pass.

Tete’s all-round nature, coupled with his commitment and versatility, could provide additional cover for Hodgson. All in all, the former Ajax youngster could replace the departed Wan-Bissaka at Selhurst Park.

Verdict

Therefore, signing Tete could turn out to be a smart piece of business from the Eagles. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the 23-year-old will leave Lyon midway through the season.
